Bajirao Mastani Movie Review

Period Drama that come along with a difference in terms of content and performance

It will be a mighty Friday this week, when two of the biggest releases are hitting the theatres a week before Christmas. This includes the magna opus from Sanjay Leela Bhansali period romantic drama film called Bajirao Mastani. The film has Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles apart from the Tanvi Azmi, Mahesh Manjrekar, along with others in the supporting role. The film is directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali under the banner of SLB Films in association with Eros. The film is among the big budget films of 2015, which is produced at budget of 120 crores. Now, let’s us dig in deep into this period romantic film as under:

Plot

The film narrates the life of the Maratha warrior commonly known as Peshwa Bajirao, which is played by Ranveer Singh and his romance with his second wife called Mastani played by Deepika Padukone, while the role of first wife is played by Priyanka Chopra called Kashibai. Amidst his love and romance with his second wife, the film narrates the historical wars with the enemies apart from showcasing the turbulence, which was inevitably noticed by one and all in the family and his closed associates. Though not much is heard from the History, hence in the film you can find a much of hypothetical stories of romance and love in it.

Script Analysis

It’s a period romantic drama along with showcasing the life surrounding the warrior and his political life apart from the turbulence seen in his marital lifestyle. In a sense it can be called as a niche film for those who have interest in history can catch the film, however, considering the buzz find the film, it may not be the case at many places. You may find things coming in a too roller coaster manner, switching on and off from one sequence to the other along with showcasing a number of political and war sequences in it giving something different at the end. Period dramas are difficult to make and especially when you are adding the element of love and romance in it, the film often loses the ground realities, which history has warrior like Peshwa Bajirao. In many ways, the film has debased the character of this great Maratha and thus getting the wrath of historians was inevitable. The film can give you lots of loo breaks provided you do not have much interest in knowing about history and things that transpired in his life and his kingdom.

Star Performance

I was wondering as to why Ranveer was considered for the role of Bajirao. However, checking his character and performance convinced me that the choice was right and suitable. Lots of energy was required especially while playing this character, which unfortunately may give tough time to others. He has done a wonderful job while playing this character. Similarly, Deepika Padukone in her character of Mastani the second wife of Peshwa left no stone unturned to play the character very much smartly. She was incredible over the screenplay right from the love and romance scenes/sequences to the character at the battlefield. In other words, she has overshadowed the performance of Priyanka Chopra, however, the latter cannot be blamed for the same since both have their own different roles and comparing the two would be rather unfair. PC too was good in her character though she was lagging behind in some way or the other in terms of screenplay.

Direction, Music, Screenplay and Editing

The direction of the film is flawless. It is not easy to make such period drama and Sanjay Leela Bhansali was simply successful in making some really nice movie for his audience. He ensured that he has used the potential of all the actors the best in the film, which made the screenplay and other technical elements perfect over the screen. The music is the backbone of this romantic period drama film. The songs are soothing and nicely composed, thanks to skilled music directors like Sanchit Balhara lest don’t forget Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his mighty and lofty sets of the film. In fact, the massive and incredible rich kind of sets has been an important feature of this film. The other elements like editing, and other technical elements too remained par as per the expectations.

Last Word – Bajirao Mastani

Bajirao Mastani is an essentially a romantic and love story, which also has showcased a number of other elements like the political turmoil and other elements found in the life of Bajirao Pesha. The film is nicely made with massive sets giving a real kind of look and feel. Right from rich content to good performances and music, the film has loads to offer, however, whether the film would be accepted by the audience in a big way is a big question to answer especially when Shah Rukh Khan starrer film Dilwale is releasing the same day.

Rating – 3.0
