Kapoor & Sons Movie Review

Modern Family Drama With Perfect Script and Dexterous Direction

This Friday is a multiple release though but only one can be called as a major release, which is obviously the one called Kapoor & Sons Since 1921. The film is directed by Shakun Batra and produced by Karan Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions. The film has Siddharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles apart from Rishi Kapoor, Siddharth Kapoor, and Ratna Pathak in the supporting roles. The family is all about the tale of two brothers coming from the same dysfunctional family of Kapoors with one being a gay in it. The film seems to enjoy a decent buzz before the release today hence is expected to get a decent business as well. Time to dig deep into the same and get the crux of the film as under:

Plot

Two estranged brothers – Rahul Kapoor played by Fawad Khan and Arjun Kapoor played by Siddharth Malhotra are forced to return to their childhood home when they have their 90 year old grandfather wants them to see and gets a stroke. While living under one room, the family secrets are seen coming one by one giving misunderstanding that turns up on the verge of making things into tragedy. Both Rahul and Arjun are seen falling love with the same girl which triggers the problems and keeps on adding up bringing in disturbance between the two. What really happens the next is interesting to explore.

Script Analysis

After the watching the trailer of K&S, it gave the impression that the film would deal with a dysfunctional family which would be rather unraveled in the Dil Dhadakne Do, however, I was rather wrong in judging things in these lines. Fortunately, the writers of the film are able to deliver something fresh before the audience this time while dealing with any dysfunctional family and the best part of the story is the way the film flows and the way it connects various sequences, character nuances and the spot over the dialogues.  The scenes simply went in a realistic fashion be it the pillow fights, dining room cold wars or the family evening get together, everything went simply awesome. The director’s attempt to deal with sibling rivalry owing to misconstrued conditions is simply applauding. In a subtle fashion, the writers are able to convey with great comfort, a stress kids have in Indian family to be a right or for that matter the way Youngers siblings are usually labeled to be irresponsible and the way forms a part of their personalities. The family could be the closest bonds over has but as a unit while they fail, it can be called as a collective effect. This is exactly where you find the story nails.

Star performances

Even though the movie is not particularly based one lead actors, the performance of Fawad Khan is simply incredible while playing the character of Rahul Kapoor who is sensitive and loving perfect son carrying a heavy duty past. Though many girls would be carried to the theatres to catch is his smile, but mind it, this time he is going to make you cry as well with his stunning performance. His performance has overshadowed Siddharth Malhotra while playing the younger character of Arjun making it a bit average. Sid seems to have a moderate kind of performance with some stagnation as well. Alia looks brilliant in the role of Tia. The others like Raja Kapoor and Ratan Pathak Shah appears to be a perfect couple role, which they have made you feel very much real while playing Mr. and Mrs. Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor comes out as one of the prosthetic work while playing the character of Daadu.

Music, Direction and other elements

Though Shakun’s previous film Ek Main Aur Ek Tu was good and unique but not many people liked it. This may not be the case with this film – K&S. He was able to embark with this film with perfect shade of emotions nicely portrayed over the silver screen via skilled star cast. So, with this movie, he has made the dream of Karan Johar come true as the film yells – It’s all about loving your family. The choice of director choosing a town like Coonoor is simply incredible. The freshness witnesses in the town are seasonal and freshness that remains startlingly visible and seen complimenting giving a decent film at the end. No fancy work in the living rooms and kitchens shown in the film. The music is soothing and the songs of the film are at the top of the chartbuster’s list. The editing could be seen losing the edge somewhere but somewhere manages to blend in the background perfectly over the scenes where there are no dialogues.

Kapoor and Sons since 1921 – Last word

Kapoor and Sons can be called as a modern age family drama, which doesn’t shy away from being emotionally soppy yet can be called as a convincingly lovable option. The film will make you cry, laugh and smile via this one. Basically, the director has proved that the drama is one of the genres, which can be added with some twists by playing with emotions. The film deserves a decent rating.

Rating – 4.0
